I remember him and his brother running with me and my brother in the street that seperated our houses, screaming and calling up and down our cul-de-sac. The cumquat tree, our black dog Petrus, hot summer days in the pool and the big stonewall around their property. His younger brother taught me my first line of English (even though he was Afrikaans) but I can't remember what the word was anymore. Andre therefor classifies as my "long lost older brother" and it's like totally awesome dudes. We speak Afrikaans and talk about our lives and laugh out loud and I haven't done any of that with a live person (as in not on skype) for a while.
I've pretty much spent my first week in LA recovering. Hey, it's not easy traveling all the time and never knowing where you're going next. Having only Cellini Euroline as company and by default only 1 suitcase full of belongings for 6 months. It's not always easy. I'm finally starting to feel like I've recovered and started investigating this cool-ass city. That's what it is. Cool-ass. It oozes out of LA without it even trying.
It also feels kinda like being at home, but I'm not sure whether it's because I'm staying with Andre or whether it's the actual location...? It seems alot like Jozi/Pretoria in a weird sort of way. Look at that lovely koppie in the pic above... That's Northcliff koppie (if you squint and block out the Hollywood sign)!
Consequently it doesn't feel like I'm overseas anymore. It feels like I've come home late at night and been picked up by an old family friend as my family is... out I guess. Like I'm waiting to be picked up by a friend or a relative who will be popping by at any second, but they haven't yet. Better get over that soon cos there ain't no one coming to pick up this cargo, no sirree.
Still unsure about where to go next, and actually just enjoying being here for a second. We are booking tickets to go watch Pieter Dirk Uys perform on the 11th in LA with some friends.
That's right folks. I came to LA to watch PD Uys perform. A man who lives and works a 30 minute drive from my old flat in SA... I don't care.
I can't wait to see his show!
